Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
